Why did pirates wear eye patches?
So that pirates could see well in the darkness below decks, they would always keep one eye covered up with a patch meaning it was constantly adjusted to the dark!
What were mermaids famous for doing?
There are many stories of mermaids combing their long, beautiful hair whilst sat on rocks offshore, singing beautiful songs.
How many shipwrecks are there around the coast of the UK?
Many pirates, fisherman and navy men didn’t often make it back to shore and now there are over 2,500 shipwrecks beneath the waves along the coast of the UK. Divers often swim deep down looking for treasure!
Were there mermaids in Cornwall?
Yes! There are many myths of mermaids in Cornish history. The mermaid of Zennor lured a man beneath the waves with her beautiful voice and they started a life together in the sea. Morvena the mermaid became stranded on a Cornish beach until a kind man saved her. To show her gratitude, Morvena granted her rescuer three wishes and even gave him the gift of her comb, saying if he needed her again he just had to comb the Cornish waves whilst calling her name.
Did pirates really walk the plank?
Pirates did not really make prisoners walk the plan! This is a legend created by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island and has been popularised since.
